Become a Coach

Coaches are essential for teaching and developing players at every level of Bowls - the role of the coach ought not to be underestimated. It is recommended that all Clubs have at least one recognised Coach and at least two ‘Play Bowls Activators’. If the club has 40+ members, we recommend having more than one recognised Coach.

Training courses are provided under the ‘Coach Bowls’ banner and is the only nationally recognised coaching qualification for the sport of bowls in England across the following formats: Outdoor, Indoor, Crown & Short Mat
It uses the UK Coaching Framework (see below) as a guideline for development, and its stated aim is to provide ‘a world class bowls coaching system for all’.

For more details on Coach Bowls, including information on membership and training opportunities for coaches, go to: www.coachbowls.org.

Coach Bowls Membership

The Coach Bowls Membership Scheme provides insurance, support and benefits to all levels of coaching, whatever code you coach. By joining the Coach Bowls Membership scheme you are actively supporting all of the work we do, helping invest in the development of Bowls coaching, supporting the future of the sport from grass roots to elite.

Coach Bursary

Bowls England’s Coaching Bursary Scheme assists members of affiliated clubs who wish to obtain a Coach Bowls qualification.

The Bowls England Coaching Bursary offers affiliated members 50 per cent of the cost of recognised Coach Bowls courses. Each application must be supported by the applicant’s club and the appointed administrator of Bowls Leicestershire.

The current criteria allow up to two members of any affiliated club to apply for a bursary within any two-year period – meaning that two members of the same club wishing to attend the same course can apply for funding support. Applicants must be at least 17 years old, and for Coach Bowls Level Two courses and above applicants must hold a recognised Coaching Certificate.

Further funding may be available from District Council grants. If not, there is a Bowls Leicestershire Bursary – see Funding tab
